Had to Try

Do all children climb inside the dryer or is it just mine?

Deeder loves watching me do the laundry. He stands on a chair to watch me load the washer and pour the soap in, I leave it open for him to watch it start the cycle then close it when he climbs down. He thinks the wet clothes are icky, so he doesn’t help put them in the dryer.
He does however love handling the freshly dried clothes, always offering his services in the folding department. I let him do the socks and throw away the used softener sheet.
Once the dryer is empty he usually pokes his head in and looks around inside, as if searching for a stray sock. He pulls his head out again, smiles at me then stands back, reaches for the dryer door and closes it with a little slam.
I can tell he’s curious about the thing–how it works. He knows it’s the same clothes, the wet ones that forty minutes later are dry, he just doesn’t know why. He feels them with his fingers, rubs his face into the familiar articles of clothing, smells them and looks at me with questions of how and why in his eyes.
And the day came, today. The day when he’d ask to get in and I’d say yes.
He climbed in, one foot, and then the two hands, his head went in then his back and the other leg. My child was gone! He sat in there on his little butt, cross legged with his hands in his lap, smiling at me as if he were thinking this was the most comfortable seat in the house and wondering why he hadn’t tried before.
I left him in there and ran upstairs for my camera.
By the time I returned, not half a minute, Deeder had decided that it was time to come out.

A little bit of assistance was required–seems getting feet into the dryer isn’t as easy as getting them out. A little too big for the dryer after all.

I hope this one fitting was good enough for him, that I haven’t created a fun childhood past time which he will have to revisit each time we do laundry together from here on out!

Diederick has the opportunity to satisfy his curiosity about so many things that a poor kid in daycare would never get to experience or even have the opportunity to wonder about. :)

Yes, I guess he does! And I have more opportunity to overload on pictures than I would if he were in daycare. :)
