Simple Fun

Tuesday morning we had rain all day. The weather guy said that it would continue on through the afternoon and into the evening. Thankfull, it didn’t!
Since he said it would, and he usually is right, I planned for an inside day. Painting, cooking and whatever else seemed like fun.

Cooking with Mr. Deeder as my right hand man is super fun, well, if we pick the right project!
Our recent favorite is Simple Granola. It’s perfect for doing with children–few ingredients and very straight forward.

Deeder’s favorite part is the stirring and tasting. When he’s a little older he can help with the counting and measuring!

Here’s the recipe:

SIMPLE GRANOLA

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Combine in large mixing bowl:
3 cups whole wheat flour
6 cups rolled oats
1 cup shredded coconut
2 teaspoons salt

Blend together separately:
½ cup water
1 cup oil
1 cup honey
2 teaspoons vanilla
Add blended liquids to dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
Spread out on 2 greased cookie sheets and bake 1 hour, or until dry and golden.
Store in covered containers.

First we got all of our supplies together:

Then Mommy putting the ingredients in their mixing bowls for Deeder to test taste!

The dry ingredients:

(whole wheat flour, rolled oats, shredded coconut, salt)

The goopy sticky stuff:

(water, oil, honey, vanilla)

My helper handling the mixing:

All mixed, divided into pans and ready to bake!

While the granola was baking we cleaned up the kitchen, loaded the dishwasher, started a load of laundry, vacuumed and swept. Then settled down in the TV room to watch Shrek and take a snooze.

PS: I don’t know what’s up with that last picture…I put in a snap of Deeder lying down watching TV and it shows this yard picture. Hmm. Sorry. Very weird.

It’s very cute seeing Diederick wearing the little apron you wore as a child, and “helping” you in the kitchen. :)

I love these pictures. I need to let my toddler help more often in the kitchen. She always wants to, I just don’t like the dealing with the mess. How old was Deeder when you let him start “helping?”
